Danica Roem, Virginia's first openly trans candidate for House of Delegates |
After Leelah Alcorn’s suicide, Oakland-based comedian Red Durkin started the hashtag #RealLiveTransAdult to show transgender people afraid of coming out that there is hope and an abundance of possibilities. Hundreds went online to share their stories.
I made a post on my Tumblr blog, sharing some of these tweets and the post became immensely popular. No wonder. These are stories so many people need to hear. So I started researching and sharing stories of real live trans adults. Here are some of the posts:
- Gizelle Messina, makeup artist for M·A·C Cosmetics – an important voice for both the African-American and the transgender community.
- Danica Roem, Virginia’s First Openly Transgender Candidate for House of Delegates (pictured above)
- Jenne Vailoces, creator of an inclusive, delicious bakery in Chicago.
- Ana Pasantino, Argentina's first transgender Chief of Police (and her loving wife of many years).
- Trans men Tiq Milan, Seth J Rainess, Dana Delgardo, and Mitch Davis.
